Advice on a processor/ keyboard

Post by Cogsworth »

Heya, As the title suggests, I'm looking for advice on a processor and a keyboard
My current processor: (I need to get my specs, I should have them soon.)
My current keyboard is some P.O.S membrane thing from Logitech that I got in a mouse bundle.

What I need is a decent, affordable processor in the 250-300 dollar price range.
I also need a nice, mechanical, Cherry MX Brown/Red keyboard.
So, any suggestions?

Processor: intel i5 series for sure. i7s are only a minimal boost for gaming and are usually for video processing.

Ivy Bridge/Haswell should perform about the same unless you don't have a dedicated gpu card.

Here's the one I'd get:

Unlocked cpu so you can overclock it when you are interested to (no fear, it's quite easy)

Keyboard? You won't regret it if you invested in a ~$100 mechanical keyboard. I'd recommend one that has keys using "Cherry MX Blue switches"

The I5-4670k is litterally $20 more tho, though it also rapes his budget because he needs a new motherboard, and if you're wanting to upgrade with ~$350 or so, then a $100 keyboard is not within your budget, sorry.

Alright, so get back to us with your current Mobo/Case/CPU and Power supply, and your total budget. At this point I'm thinking it might be best to just go with AMD for this price range, and because it has much better integrated graphics, since you can't afford a new GPU.

(HOLY SHIT SOULHARVESTER IS RECOMMENDING AMD CPU WHAT THE FUCK IS GOING ON IT'S THE END OF THE WORLD AHHHH!! Actually super cheap builds is AMD's main market, they're okay for people who are either satisfied without or can't afford dedicated GPUs.)

Are you really going to buy a $100+ keyboard for like a $300-400 computer?

I was just suggesting it. We really need to know his current ram and cpu socket and gpu to discuss much furthur. But mechanical keyboards ftw :3.

Amd is for cheap budget gaming desktops. I'd still take a low end i5 over a amd as each i5 core is stronger than amd's and are of 22nm architecture. $180 for the cheapest ivy i5, i believe. Mobo of your choice could be up to $120, totalling to around $200. If you dont have a decent gpu, I'd shoot for that first before the keyboard. Non-mech keyboards aren't that bad. I run a hd 7860, and sold the extra stuff it came with on newegg and got it sub-$100. Specs for your comp pls :3

You mean a total of $300 for the CPU and mobo, He obviously can't afford both an I5 and a decent GPU to go with it.

And we haven't even breached the issue of RAM or PSU, let alone know the model of his case, which I want to assume can accommodate both ATX or MicroATX, though I'd like to be certain.

Also, the reason I'm suggesting he go with AMD for this build, is that AMD has a vastly superior integrated GPU compared to anything Intel's put out yet, which makes a world of difference when the guy can't afford a dedicated GPU. Especially when the top consumer AMD Richland CPU is $160, compared to intel's $180 for an I5-3350p.

Which by the way has no integrated graphics regardless, the closest I5 coming near that price being a sandy bridge with Intel HD 2000, which is three generations behind now.

Cogsworth, would you mind downloading Speccy and posting a screenshot of the overview?
