When you start using (or begin to start using) a slang term used to target a specific demographic in a non-discriminate way, it disempowers the true meaning of the word. Don't get me wrong, I'm totally glad that people are concerned about homophobia, but there's a big difference between being genuinely homophobic and using a word with potential homophobic implications. I understand that using "fag" and "faggot" as insults may very well hurt peoples feelings, but I think it's much better for the world as a whole if people continued to use the word indiscriminately than to focus on the hatred it was intended to have.
Faggot has, or nearly has, become an almost meaningless word. In my eyes, it's a hell of a better to let the word continue to degrade and lose its meaning than to let yourself get hurt by it.
Some of you may disagree with me on this, and like I said - I don't approve of homophobia one bit. But I do think that making a big deal about the word and being openly offended by it only makes it more of a damaging weapon for people who are truly hateful against homosexuals. If you let your feelings get hurt by a word, you are only letting the users of the word gain more power over you, and anyone else who it may affect.
