Next card or CPU?

Post by ChaoticSlink »

So the new 300 series AMD cards have come out, and I'm going to upgrade my GPU sometime soon. I'm curious if they're any good or if anyone knows how well they'd compare to a GTX 980 Ti which is extremely powerful, except has a hefty price tag.

Here's the 2 cards, pretty big difference... I'd buy either of those 2 cards. Clearly the 980 is stronger, however it is double the price, would it even be worth it? I want the card to last 3 years, and if I got the AMD card I could also upgrade my cpu at the same time. Getting the 980, not so much... I really could use a i5-4690k, and a new motherboard, and I'm sure both cards will bottleneck from my FX-6300, my dad has offered to give me his fx-8150, overclocked to 5GHz, maybe more with the H100i water cooler, a new motherboard, and a GTX 980 Ti, might be a good option. However I've never had a reliable AMD card before, the ones I had always ran into problems, this Nvidia one is mint, 100% of the time.

Option 1 - Buy a 980 Ti, and yeah, that's it, upgrade cpu later (half a year down the road).

Option 2 - Buy a R9 390x and upgrade my cpu within a month

Option 3 - Upgrade my cpu now, tough it out with my GTX 660 2GB, and get another card around christmas.

I'm also glad I waited for new cards to come out, really excited, good thing I didn't buy anything 6 months ago.

Current specs:

FX-6300 at 4.6GHz, 6 core
GTX 660 2GB
256GB SSD
512GB SSD
16GB DDR3 1800MHz RAM (don't shoot me for 16GB, I run servers constantly, 90% of games I play with bud's I run the server, I need it)
Some motherboard that I want to replace with a Z97 MSI when I upgrade my CPU
750W PSU
H100i water cooler (will put in when I make changes to my pc)

The CPU would make a noticable difference but that cards would too... I mainly want to run Witcher 3 on Higher settings than I currently do, I'm sure a better CPU would help, any suggestions? I'm stuck at this points and could use some input. And yes, I will be overclocking, I know my stuff, just enjoy input on decisions. I will be buying one of these 3 options next month.

Hopefully this pasted over alright... Pasting from another forum...

Option 1 definitely, The specs of that card blow your machine away and is worth the price, gonna put in one(or even 2 if stuff is co-opping upcomming months) mine machine too; soon-ish !

The CPU you have now is allready a beefy chip wich is also pretty new, and will do fine, you can operate with even a 4-year old chip and will do fine too, only thing is that the loading times take some longer. (if you have a older or slower chip)

Number 1!

The GPU is to me the most important part.

That FX-6300 will be holding back a GTX 980 ti in a lot of games, though. FX-8320s and FX-8350s are already known to bottleneck even GTX 980s and R9 290Xs in a decent amount of games.

Also, what's your motherboard for the FX-8150? If it doesn't have the proper cooling or power delivery, you're likely going to experience some VRM throttling.

Like the others, I'd grab the GPU first. If you keep an eye out for /r/buildapcsales, you can often find deals. I got my GTX 980 for $369 + tax from EVGA's B-Stock. http://www.evga.com/Products/ProductList.aspx?type=8

Then upgrade to a Z97 board and a i5-4690k. After that, you'll be set for awhile. I'd try to upgrade the CPU in a timely manner though, so I'm going for more of an option 2.

Yeah the Gigabyte GA-970A-DS3 isn't that great. It's got no cooling on the power delivery and uses a pretty weak 4+1 analogue phase design. I actually wouldn't put any 8 core FX in it - it'll have trouble handling one even at stock speeds unless you have a ton of cooling for your motherboard.

Hooray for computer upgrades and $1600 worth of purchases! I'm gonna go cry as I watch money fly out of my wallet, and then be super happy as the parts arrive and I run all the games.
