Scare tactic scam warning.

Post by Werm »

Hello all, I just ran into a scammer that used a new sort of scamming tactic on me.

I call it the "scare tactic scam"

Basically, what happens is they will try to make some sort of official statement or claim with the intent to scare you into complying with them. They will then use this to get you to do something that will lead them to compromise/steal your account.

In this chat I just had, this person made the claim that I had to add and tell a "steam admin" that they filed a false report. I called them out after I got enough evidence, and they removed me.

polar bear ツ:
hello are you there
i really need to talk to you

werm:
yea im here
whats up

polar bear ツ:
i may have done something on accident
i might reported you for having duped items instead of someone else but it was a mistake im very sorry
please don't get mad

werm:
It's alright, I don't have any duped items, so nothing should happen. Just be careful next time

polar bear ツ:
sorry for the trouble he banned my friend he told me that you need to confirm that it was a mistake report
i hope you understand

werm:
where do I go to do that?

polar bear ツ:
Steam Community :: 𝐔𝐧𝐤𝐧𝐨𝐰𝐧 {removed the link
{removed the link}
he is the admin
just add him and confirm that i mistakenly reported you by accident

werm:
Why cant you just tell him it was a mistake?

polar bear ツ:
he doesnt listen to me no matter how i say that it was a mistake im sorry
sorry for the trouble :/
he said you have 3 hours to add him so that he can confirm that it was a report made by accident or your account will get banned

werm:
and thus, a shitty scam attempt was attepted

polar bear ツ:
no its not

werm:
that makes zero sense, plus that is a lame scare tactic. I have done nothing wrong, therefor nothing will happen.

He removed me as soon as he read that last message.

Feel free to call people out, there is nothing wrong with being suspicious.

Trust your gut.

I’m pretty sure that is a bot response. If that happens to anyone immediatly block who ever sends you this kind of message. Usually hacked accounts send these.

Why would you ever accept fear when you have the power to refuse it?
SkyBlue: He didn't lick it good enough.
Onion: is it cause of my race?

if I don't get a comment on my profile prior to being added, I automatically block adds. I recommend everyone does this
